Proposal

The Logical reasoning that I will use in my op-ed is the evidence I found that prop 30 will cause if fails.  I found that if prop 30 fails the schools will be getting more cuts. The school will get millions of cute. The classes will be more crowed. There will be less counselors and nurses at our schools. There will be less money for books and resources for our schools. The school will be cutting three weeks of school. After school programs will not exist no more. USC will be getting cuts of $250 million, result in class cuts and layoff of faculty. Prop 30 basically can change my future and for many other students. It scares me to think that prop 30 can fails and I will not continue my education.  Many people will lose their jobs and wonder if I will see my counselor next semester. There is a probability that my little sister will not go to after school if this proposition fails.
I am using logos to make my audience see and believe that that prop 30 will make a big change to our education system. Some of the audience might have family that will lose their job if prop 30 fails. Some of them have kids and that will affect them to. Their kid of little brothers will not continue in the after school program. For some kid this is really helpful to finish their homework.
I as a student in Cabrillo College have seen every semester that effect of the cuts. Every semester I have a hard time enrolling on to my classes. The first week of school, I see many students seating on the floor because there are so many in the class that there is not enough chairs. Every semester I can’t enroll into all the classes I need to because there are so many student. Many good instructors have been layoff because of the cuts and there are fewer classes. I believe that education is something important and that’s the reason why am continuing my education here in Cabrillo college.
Using ethos will make audience believe that this issue is affecting me to achieve my goal. As a result of the cuts, it’s taking me longer to transfer to a graduate and transfer to a University. This is not only happening to me but also to many students that want to continue their education.
I am scare to think that I will not graduate because of all the cuts. I wonder if I will complete my education and transfer to San Jose State University. All of these cuts will stop me from achieving The American Dream. I am not the only one affected by this issue but also your brother, sister, or your son. Many mothers and Fathers are deciding to come back to school because of the economy but some of them will not make it because cuts to schools. This semester I only enroll in to three classes because the classes are so pack, nut I believe I got in to some classes. I heard from my friends that there are people that did not get in to any classes. The cuts will also decide the future of many high school students the will graduate and want to continue in higher education.  Many students will not come back the next semester
By using pathos am hoping to make a connection and convince my audience. Am hoping people will vote yes on prop. Many parents children are graduating want to continue in higher education. Everyone in the audience has a connection to the facts I gave.

Bill Freeman.San Diego Union Tribute Opinion-Prop. 30investing in education, economy. School & Local Public Safety Protection Act.1st ed.N.p. n.d.Web.23,September,2012.

In “San Diego Union Tribute Opinion-Prop.30 invests in education, economy” By Bill Freeman president of the 7,000 member San Diego Education Association explains why we should vote yes on prop 30. Freeman explains that proposition 30 will tax the wealthiest more for seven year. He explains that prop 30 is the only hope to stop millions of cuts to school. Without this proposition they will be less classroom aid, librarians, and counseling for our students. i agree with Freeman and I hope this investment will work or else it will be really hard for me to continue in Cabrillo College.
Blumenstyk, Goldie, “If prop 30 Fails, What Then?” Chronicle Of Higher Education 58.44 (2012): 31. Academic Search Complete. Wed. 21 sep.2012.

In “If Prop 30 Fails, What Then?”  by Godie Blumenstyk, he describes the consequences of educations future if prop 30 fails to do what it intend to do. He comments that if prop 30 fails on the 2013 term, Community Colleges, Universities of California System, and California State University, the state will automatically make millions of cuts. Lawmakers in Sacramento want colleges to start operating more economically. This article shows the reality of what could happen to my future and of many other students if prop 30 fails. I believe it’s a good prop but there are chances that it could fail.

In “Spending  Taxpayers Dollars to Push Prop 30 is Illegal (Oh, and Political Stupid, too)” analyzes the massive tax increase and the lies behind proposition 30.  While politicians are concerning what would happen if prop 30 does not works, they give raises and approving projects not necessary and leaving education to the side. California is the state in the nation that pays the highest tax sales and income tax. This article reveal to me and many other people that politicians are not using funds correctly.  They are using funds on other project not really necessary and leaving education on the proposition of a proposition.

Dina Marin.Prevent more cuts-yes on prop. 30.Teachers Assosiation.Vol 17 iss 1.N.P.n.d.Web.23,September,2012.

In “Prevent More Cuts-Yes on Prop 30” by Dina Marti, Explains that education is not the only affected by the budget cuts but also the police departments. Pro 30 will fund classrooms and Police in the street for our safety. She explains that the tax will only increase temporarily for the wealthiest. The money goes straight to an special account that Legislatures can’t touch.  Martin also explains that if this proposition fails many schools will be getting millions of cuts. This means less teachers, nurses, counselors, and crowded classes. Governor Jerry Brown is hopeful that the wealthiest support his initiative for the future of our kids. Like Dina I hope voters make a good decision and the wealthiest decide to help. This will make a big difference because this proposition might decide if I continue school next semester.

Jhon Gatto "Against School"

In the article against school, by JHON TAYLOR GATTO, he discusses his perspective of why he is against the school system and believes that its wrong. Being a teacher four thirty years made him believe that schools are not always what we think they are. The author thinks that schools most of the time only school the children and not educate. He believes that schools are not always the right place to receive an education.

The author comments that schools are meant to create our children in to people that are easy to manipulate by other people to create harm. He believes that the education many times does not come from an institution but from parents or from outside of the educational system. Gatto writes, “School trains children to be employees and consumers; teach your own to be leaders and adventurers. School trains children to be flexibly; teach your own to think critically and independently. Well-schooled kids have a low threshold for boredom; help your own to develop an inner life so they’ll never be bored (155). This means that most of time schools only train our children to follow a pattern or be followers and work for others. They are only training them at school to do one specific thing or do one job. When they are not in school, it’s the parents turn to educate their kids to learn what they didn’t get in school. To make them become good leader, I believe you have to explain to them, teach them, let them practice, and let them follow what you thought them. When they are not at home let them make small decisions, so they can see the result of their actions.

I agree with Gatto in some part of his argument, and like him also think that we can get educated outside of school. We can learn from older people or by being assigned to responsibilities at home to become more responsable. In my experience, I have to help pay rent. Every month I have to contribute to pay rent and have the money on time. When I started Cabrillo College, I found out that I would not qualify for any financial aid, and I would have to pay for everything. I decided that if I had to continue in higher education, I would have to pay everything by myself. After two years, I still continue paying everything by myself and continue in school. Every semester I have to figure out how to pay for all my classes and books. I have to do this on the first month of school because if I don’t do it I might not get in the classes for the next semester. This is hard because I only have a part time job, and sometimes I don’t earn enough money for school and rent. I know this a challenge, but it will help me to become a better person, and in the future I will be prepared for new obstacles to come. I didn’t learn everything from school. the person I am today--hard worker, respectful, and committed-- I learned from my family and friends around me.

Week one. Poem "Para Teresa"

In the poem “Para Teresa” by Ines Hernandez-Avila, the writer wrote the poem in English and Spanish to represent Mexican and American cultuere. The poem describes a fight between two Pachuca’s, in the 1950’s. The fight takes place in their school named Alamo during lunch hour. They both argue because they have different points of view of how the system operated.

The poem is written in English and Spanish because, I believe that she wants to show that she is bicultural. She wants to represent The American and Mexican culture. The poem describes how two young Mexican Americas girls decide to fight the system in two different ways. They both want to fight in different ways but for the same cause. The writer wants to fight and succeed by following the system because she thinks is that right way to do it. She does it for her mother, father, and grandfather that have sacrificed for her to have a better future. Her friend, Teresa, does it with defiance and arrogance. She is against the system and doesn’t believe in it and decides to not follow it. They both have the same goal, but the narrator believes that the only way to fight the system is by getting educated and following the rules. Ines writes, “tu y yo, Teresa /we went in different directions/ pero nos fuimos jutas”(65-67). This shows that they both are fighting for what they believe in but in different ways. The writer wants to get educated and follow the educational system rules. Teresa does not follow it because she doesn’t believe the system is right with her people, and they do not have the rights they deserve. All of this happened in the 1950’s and during that time life for Mexicans in the Alamo area was tough. After the Mexican American war, life for many Mexican changed in many different ways. They were discriminated and stripped from their properties because they couldn’t understand the new system or didn’t have the money to fight for their properties.

I believe the narrator can understand better and has a new reaction because she now is more mature and has a better understanding of how the system works. At the age of twenty-eight, now she can understand her friend Teresa. As years passed, she might have experienced things with the system that made her have a new reaction and see that Teresa wasn’t truly wrong on what she believed in. I also agree with both of them for what they were fighting for. I believe that the only way to succeed is to get educated. In order to get to our goal or get what we want to follow the rules sometimes. I think Teresa was also right for fighting in what she believed in.

The poem written in English and Spanish make it more interesting and I can identify with because I speak both languages.it was easier for me to understand it and related it to similar experiences I had in the past coming to The United States.
